Care Instructions

To ensure your new Hannah Lou earrings look as good as the day you received them, follow the care instructions as detailed. Damage to earrings by failing to follow instructions, voids your ability to return item as damaged or faulty.

      • Although Hannah Lou earrings aren’t extremely fragile and do have a slight flexibility to them, please do not put excess pressure on them by bending (especially in a cold environment as the clay is more brittle). This can cause damage to the polymer clay, the earring fixing and jump rings which could cause a breakage.

      • Store in a dry place (not a bathroom!) and ideally on a stand, in a jewellery case/box or on the earring card provided, where they will be kept safe from damage and over-exposure to direct sunlight. Over-exposure to sunlight can cause polymer clay to become more brittle, as it affects the plastics.

      • Please make sure your earrings are stored safely away from children to avoid them becoming a chocking hazard. Earrings are not toys and should be removed if tiny hands or mouths become fascinated by them to avoid choking or damage to the earring.

      • Don’t wear whilst applying make up, hair products or styling hair to avoid staining/marking/pulling to the earrings.

      • Avoid contact to freshly dyed hair until you know that excess dye transfer is no longer going to mark earrings, especially with lighter colour clay.

      • Ensure face masks do not transfer colour, as this could result in staining to the polymer clay

      • Avoid contact with perfumes, sprays, oils and harsh chemicals

      • Avoid wearing whilst swimming, bathing or showering

      • Avoid putting earrings into bags, handbags, clutches, suitcases etc. without placing them in something rigid that will protect them from breaking by force from other items or pulling on the ear posts/ jump-rings. I recommend a reusable sturdy plastic box that can be sealed is recommended as it will hold its shape and won’t crush under added weight to protect earrings.

      • Avoid dropping earrings, especially from a height and/or onto a hard surface

      • Do not fall asleep in your earrings as you may unknowingly pull or put excess pressure on them which could result in them breaking. They could also pose as a health risk if they were to come out and you were unaware.

      Cleaning Instructions

      • Its best practise to clean your earring after each wear to avoid a build up of dirt/oils (especially with lighter coloured earrings). To do this use a soft damp cloth with either water or a non-oily micellar water (Hannah recommends Nivea Micellar make up remover) and gently wipe them. Then pat of any excess moisture with a clean dry cloth and leave to dry and store correctly. If there is a varnish of some sort on your earrings - only use water not the micellar water.

      • If there is a stubborn mark on your earring you can try a small amount rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl Alcohol) on a q-tip. However, we do only recommend this as a last option and after trying the above cleaning method. The Rubbing alcohol can change appearance of colours (especially darker colours) and textures and should not be used in excess or overly rubbed in one area as it can break down the polymer clay and start to pit in the that area. Brush softly with the q-tip, checking the earring on each swipe to make sure no damage is occurring and leave to dry once happy with the appearance. Please note rubbing alcohol should not be used on any earring which has been sealed or foiled in any way as it will wear these materials away. As mentioned above, this is a last option and Hannah Lou will not be held responsible for damage to the earring by overuse or unnecessary use of rubbing alcohol. If in doubt, contact us beforehand via our Contact page.

      • To clean silver plated brass posts, first try a dry soft cloth and buff the post. If this does not work, use a damp q-tip with water (or micellar water if water doesn't work) and gently wipe away any discolouration. Please note - not all tarnishing may disappear, however this process should remove most.

      • To clean surgical steel or stainless steel posts use a dry soft cloth and lightly buff.

      • To clean our surgical steel and stainless steel jump-rings buff lightly with a dry soft cloth.

Please note that all earrings over time will get a natural patina as they are worn. Polymer clay is a porous material that absorbs the natural oils from the skin creating the patina.
